Abstract:  This paper reviews developments in the representation of dc systems and control within ac/dc transient stability programs.  The relevance of short-circuit ratio and ac/dc interaction are drawn to some new proposals for improving for improving the modeling capability for interaction involving transient waveform distortion and imbalance together with the prediction of commutation failure.  Some guidance is suggested in the selection of model to use.

Abstract:  Digital computer programs are playing a greater role in the planning, design and operation of dc transmission systems.  EMTDC is an electromagnetic transients program developed particularly for the study of dc systems.  How this program came into being, its capabilities, and how it is applied in studying the impact of dc transmission on the ac voltage waveshape is covered in this paper.  Overvoltage studies are discussed since overvoltages are critical to both customer equipment and dc converter designs.
